Created in 1969 and approved by the French Environment Ministry in 1985, the Société Française d’Orchidophilie (SFO) merged in early 2021 with the regional associations of the Fédération Française des Amateurs d’Orchidées (FFAO) and became the Fédération France Orchidées (FFO).
It is a well-known non-profit association with about 1,800 active members, orchid-lovers or specialists.
Its activities are primarily focused on:
-
the knowledge and conservation of wild orchids in France and around the world,
-
the publication of a quarterly review: L’Orchidophile,
-
an introduction on how to grow and care for exotic species of orchids,
-
scientific work (on the biology, ecology and the conservation of orchids, seminars, publications, support to research studies, grants for young researchers),
-
the ongoing mapping of orchids in France (with the support of the French Environment Ministry).
Initiated and monitored by the FFO, Orchisauvage is a specialized website for collecting and sharing naturalistic data on wild orchids in mainland France.
